The
F. M. Alexander Technique is educational rather than a
treatment, which is reflected in the language used: teaching,
lesson, pupil and teacher. Anyone can benefit from the technique
and anyone can learn it.
The
technique is taught in one-to-one lessons with a qualified
teacher (lasting approximately 40 minutes). At the beginning it
is advisable to have lessons as frequently as possible for best
results. The number of lessons will depend on your particular
needs and goals.
The
aim of a lesson is to give you an awareness of your habitual
pattern of reaction to a stimulus and to develop the means to
change it. Through gentle hands-on guidance and explanation, you
will discover where you are holding unwanted tension in everyday
movements such as sitting, standing, walking and speaking. Gradually,
as you become more conscious, you will learn how to regain your
natural balance and co-ordination, using less effort in whatever
you do.
Whereas
no special clothing is required, it helps to be dressed
comfortably. Women may feel more at ease wearing trousers rather
than a skirt. You will be asked to take your shoes off.
